The High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) is the core United Nations platform for follow-up and review of progress on the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the global level.
The HLPF meets annually under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for eight days, including a three-day ministerial segment and every four years at the level of Heads of State and Government under the auspices of the General Assembly for two days. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development encourages member states to “conduct regular and inclusive reviews of progress at the national and subnational levels, which are country-led and country driven” (Paragraph 79). HLPF annual meetings are informed by these Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs), which aim to facilitate the sharing of experiences, including successes, challenges, and lessons learned, with a view to accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. The VNRs also seek to strengthen policies and institutions of governments and to mobilize multi-stakeholder support and partnerships for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. The HLPF 2021 under the auspices of ECOSOC resulted in a negotiated Ministerial Declaration for inclusion in the report of the Council to the General Assembly. The HLPF will adopt the Ministerial Declaration as the outcome of its 2022 session.
The theme for the HLPF 2022 is:
“Building back better form the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) while advancing the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”.
Among other functional commissions and intergovernmental bodies and forums, the Broadband Commission was invited to provide substantive inputs to the thematic review for HLPF 2022 building on continuous cooperation in providing substantive inputs to the HLPF, as the central platform for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals.
This year, the Commission collaborated on a submission to showcase the views, findings, research, data and policy recommendations our connectivity-based response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the SDGs under review. Many of these findings are drawn from the Commission’s Agenda for Action as well as the 2021 State of Broadband Report.
The inputs of the Broadband Commission to the 2022 HLPF meeting can be found on the UN HLPF Website.
